URGENT REQUIREMENT FOR KEY VOLUNTEER IN OPEN DOOR CAFE

There is an urgent requirement for a volunteer to fill a key position within the Open Door Cafe organisation.  Whilst specific Terms of Reference are not available for this position, Maryon Gardiner has kindly offered the following description of what the job entails:

Purchasing the weekly food and put into the fridge – temperatures to be taken.

Purchasing the on going needs such as napkins, table cloths, washing up liquid, tins of tuna (not always easy to find at a reasonable price) and biscuits – places such as Lidl have good price biscuits if one is out and about.

Organising rotas – 1. Weekly helper rota – really need 6 people

2. Food rota – soups, baking – two soups per week, scones, cake, shortbread and any other offers! (Bread and butter pudding)

3. Taking note of stall requests – liaising with them and Willie for tables – getting forms signed.

Check the kitchen – there is a check list for before and after– filters to be cleaned, vermin (preferably none) check, wash walls by oven and sinks, wash kitchen floor after. As an LCF member I then wash hall floor and toilets – and if I am not there the hall floor is washed especially if a wet day. Toilets are sometimes done then but not everyone can stay behind to help long enough to get this done, so it is usually me who does this. The Hall is also vacuumed at the end. (Twice recently I have also washed parts of the floor where there are bad marks, but this is not done regularly as we are all too tired!!)

Check toilets have enough paper! (Bins should be empty, sometimes not..

In the event of Willie or Heather being unable to set up setting up the Hall (tables, chairs, cloths, soup kettles etc; kitchen utensils and crockery)

Arriving at the Hall early on Friday (by 9am) having purchased the bread en route.

Prepare the tables with milk, sugar, biscuits etc,

Prepare the food in the kitchen – potatoes need to be in the oven around 9am – cheese to prepare, salad to prepare – Elizabeth makes coleslaw (Jill did, Maryon does not!)

Fill urn and turn on, also prepare soup kettles.

Arrange food on soup table, heat soup and check temperatures.

During opening times staff are allocated positions and a key person would take one of these:

Take orders

Clear tables

Chat to ‘customers’

Make up orders

Serve at soup table.

We have regular washer uppers – the most elderly of our team on the whole – and the key person would make sure they in particular take enough breaks and that everyone else take a break for lunch (or has the opportunity to, many wait until it is quiet at the end)

Often Willie comes back to help clear away relieving us of the heavy work.

The key person would take the washing away to do and have back before the following Friday. It does NOT need ironing!!

If you think you can help, please contact Helen in the Church Office.

Welcome to the Website of Lochalsh Parish Church.

We are a small rural Church of Scotland congregation situated in the beautiful parish of Lochalsh in Wester Ross.

We believe that God has loved the world in the most amazing way, by giving His Son Jesus Christ as our Saviour.

We believe that the greatest need of all people is to know that God loves them, and to experience Gods love and forgiveness in their own lives through Jesus.

We believe that we have been called by God to share the Gospel (Good News) of Jesus Christ, both in Word and in action, and to serve the community of Lochalsh in Jesus name.

We hope you enjoy browsing our site. Please make yourself at home and enjoy the tour. If we can be of any help, or if you have any questions, then please contact us.
